  1. I never would have thought about wall mounting these types of boxes, but it seems like a good idea, handy access and yet remains portable on a french cleat.

  2. Beautiful. Love your work. Been making Japanese boxes to store my tools, so we share that in common. ๐Ÿ™‚ Been stacking them, but hanging them is such a great idea.

  3. That looks great and thanks for the video – I don’t think I’ve seen that even though I know it’s old. I’m working on a similar box for my oldest and will use this as reference material. Did you use opposing wedges to “close” up the box? The last picture seems to indicate that on the bottom batten. If so, was that because you wanted extra assurance for when it’s hanging? Or am I just hallucinating?

What are you tool choices for bowl carving? I’ve been thinking of getting into it but I’m stuck in the “understand the tools” phase right now.

And finally, did you change shops or just move stuff around? That “new corner” looks pretty sweet.

    Take care,
    Shawn

    1. Thanks for the kind words. The lid uses an opposing wedge to hold it in place Japanese tool box style.

Old Country Workshop (http://countryworkshops.org/Store.html) used to have a recommended starter recommendations on it. You might poke around on the site and see where it leads you.

And I just moved things around in one corner of my shop. No moving .. boo!

  4. Great stuff, Marilyn. Always enjoy your blog. P.S. How many frigging saws do you have????? ๐Ÿ™‚ Please write me into your will.

    1. Jack – Ha!! My list of saws would sound like a scene from Best in Show .. table saw, band saw, sash saw, cross cut saw, panel saw ….. BUT I really have only one or two more hand saws than Chris recommends in the Anarchist Tool Chest and that’s because I inherited them. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I know it’s been a while since you made this but hopefully you will still see this comment. I am about to layout my greenwood tools to come up with an interior layout for a similar Japanese style box. Also planning on using your idea to hang on the wall when in the shop.

Quick question or two on your interior … is there anything you would change? Also, what is the two small stubs in the dadoes toward the bottom of the lower left hand compartment when hanging on your wall? Was that a divider that you removed, or does it serve some other purpose?

    1. I think you are referring to the drawer runners that I installed. I haven’t yet made the drawer. ๐Ÿ™‚
I would add clips that would hold the tools in place while the chest was vertical. I’ll be adding those some day as well.
      Thanks for reading!
