Workbench mortise layout

So maybe I’m paranoid, but when I laid out my mortise for my chest of drawers, I had troubles. So I used a story stick for this project and lined every thing up using the top of the legs.

We’ll see how it worked when I start putting everything together. I’ll be using this in my next project as well for my desk cabinet.

I got a little time to work on my workbench yesterday and got the mortises done. I opted to use the router for this task. Two inch, 5/8″ mortises seemed a bit daunting any other way. So I used the spinney load tool.

BTW, I converted my router dust collection similar to Chris Wong over at Flair Woodworks (thanks for the idea Chris!). In his post Adapting a Porter Cable 890-Series Plunge Router to fit a Festool D27 Dust Extraction HoseI believe he turned his piece of PVC to fit into his router dust collection. I just went to Home Depot and bought a piece of PVC that fit and tightened it all up with plummer’s tape.

Wine Rack Installed

Here’s the wine rack installed. I used Daly’s Profin again for the finish, sanding in the first coat with 400 grit paper and then adding in two additional coats. Wine bottles sit in cut out that I used a rasp to shape. Shelves are mounted in dados with glue and screws. Wood is Paduk.

This is a project that I’ll remember for a looong time. There is orange saw dust everywhere .. and I mean everywhere. I’ll be finding it for a long time.

Wine Rack shelf shaping and glue up

I cut out the shape for the wine bottles to rest in and then used my rasps to clean up the shape.

Then on to the glue up. This was a relatively easy glue up.

Here’s how the shelves turned out. There’s space for the bottle to sit down in the shelf . The shaping should allow the bottle to sit horizontally.
